Nursery workers invited to foundation degree taster

30 March 10

Local childcare workers are being invited to attend a free taster event at Newcastle-under-Lyme College tonight.

The taster event for the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies is being held on Tuesday 30 March, from 5.30 – 8.00pm, at the College’s new campus on Knutton Lane.

The aim of the taster event is to offer advice and information to childcare employees who are interested in studying the part-time Foundation Degree.

The College offers the three year course in partnership with Staffordshire University. It is delivered through a mixture of work-based and college learning, with classes held at the College one evening per week.

Terrie Hewitt, Head of the Faculty of Foundation and Vocational Studies, said: “The course directly appeals to people working within nursery and early years’ settings, who require a hands-on, vocational pathway to higher level qualifications and career progression.”

“Students develop technical skills and specialist knowledge relevant to the early years’ sector, as well as transferable skills in areas such as IT, teamwork and communication.

“At the end of the course, students have the option to progress onto the final year of an Honours degree programme. After the degree, they can move on to Early Practitioner status or teacher training.”

Applicants should hold a current and valid Level 3 Early Years qualification plus at least one year post-qualifying experience in a supervisory capacity in an early years’ setting, such as a nursery, kindergarten, pre-school, community crèche or Sure Start centre.

The College has organised a series of taster events for its wide range of Foundation Degree courses.
