Students learn to lead with the RAF

22 February 10

Construction students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) will be visiting the Royal Air Force (RAF) this week.

On Wednesday 24 February, a group of 20 students will be visiting the RAF Motivational Outreach Team at Cosford from 10am - 2pm to build on their leadership and team-working skills by taking part in a low ropes activity.

Several of the students attending previously took part in a range of practical personal development challenges designed to develop communication and problem solving skills with the RAF in October 2009.

Rob Sproson and George Lukic, construction lecturers from the College, will also be attending the activities. The Motivational Outreach Team working with the students on the day will include Corporal Chris Miller, who is a qualified high/low ropes instructor and Corporal Barry Jones.

Anne Laverick, the College’s Personal Development Coordinator who liaised with the RAF and staff at college to arrange the visit: “We want our students to realise the importance of good leadership skills and teamwork, both in the workplace and socially.

The practical sessions will be introduced and followed up with a discussion about the activity, during which students will be able to reflect upon what they have learnt and talk about real life situations where they have needed to use leadership and teamwork skills.

She continues: “We’re grateful to the RAF for hosting this visit and hope the students will use the experience to help him them progress and be successful in the future.”
