College secures sports legacy grant

03 March 10

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) has received a £1,500 grant from the Sports Legacy Trust to support sports coaching within the local community.

The money will be used to fund various courses, workshops and coaching qualifications for students from the College’s Sports Volunteering and Leadership Academy.

At the end of the training, the students will be able to deliver a range of sports and fitness sessions for local children in Knutton, Cross Heath and Silverdale.

Trevor Humphreys, Sports Development Co-ordinator at the College, said: “The College is committed to supporting our local community and making a positive difference to people’s lives.

“Thanks to this grant, the students on our Sports Volunteering Academy will be able to improve their coaching skills, enabling them to deliver a range of sports programmes to improve the fitness of the local community.”

The Sports Legacy Trust aims to encourage people to participate in fun fitness session without travelling far from home.

The programme, which is running until July 2010, is supported by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT). The CRT is an independent charity dedicated to changing the face of coalfields communities across the UK through supporting social and economic regeneration.

The College’s Sports Volunteering and Leadership Academy is part of NULC Academy of Sport, which is based at the Gordon Banks Sports Centre at the College’s £60 million new campus.
