Wolstanton High School win first ever Maths tournament
Wolstanton High School have become the first ever winners of Newcastle-under-Lyme College’s Maths Jam tournament.
The tournament, which was held on 30 June in the college’s new campus on Knutton Lane, involved teams from six local high schools.
The event was aimed at promoting Mathematics and gave students interested in the subject an opportunity to test their skills against students from the other schools.
The six schools that took part were Trentham High, Blurton Business and Enterprise College, Chesterton Community Sports College, Birches Head High, Madeley High and Wolstanton High School.
Two students were chosen from each year including 7, 8, 9 and 10. They competed within their own age range before a general school team round in the college’s new auditorium.
The event was the idea of current NULC Head of Maths Andy Snape who, alongside the School Liaison team , coordinated a series of challenging quiz questions where the students fought to become Maths Jam winners 2010.
Andy Snape said, “We wanted to offer something original to engage maths students within the schools and believed a tournament would be something that would excite everyone involved. The tournament was a huge success and is something that we will definitely be running again in the New Year”.
Garry Smith, A Maths teacher from Wolstanton High School said, “The Maths Jam was a good chance to meet other staff and students from other schools and improve links with the College”.
Wolstanton High School performed superbly and were the first winners of this illustrious title and will display the trophy in their school reception alongside individual certificates of their victory.
