Sport Courses at NULC

Sport courses at NULC give you the opportunity to develop a range of techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Preparation for employment

Our vocational sports courses are designed to prepare you for appropriate employment in the sector, and are suitable for those who have decided that they clearly wish to enter a particular specialist area of work in the areas of sport, leisure and fitness.

Progression to university

Last year 80% of students were expected to progress to universities across the country including Loughborough, Liverpool and Leeds as well as Manchester Metropolitan (MMU) and Staffordshire.

Contribution to the community

During the course you will have the opportunity to undertake a work placement and will be encouraged to join the NULC Academy of Sport which will enable you to undertake volunteering and coaching qualifications.

Pass Rates

In 2010, five courses recorded a 100% achievement rate. Of these courses, A Level PE gained this outstanding level for the 6th successive year.

71% of the students in the performance groups and 42% of Sports Science students gained high grade profiles (any combination of three grades where the first two grades are Distinction or Merit, and the last one is a Distinction, Merit, or Pass (i.e DDD, DDM, DMM, DDP, DMP, MMM, MMP).

Steve Sumnal

Lecturer in Sports Science, FC Coach

Steve completed an MPhil and BSc in Sports Science at the University of Wales, Swansea. He then continued his studies at Liverpool John Moores University, completing his PGCE. Steve has various coaching awards such as: UEFA B Football License, Rugby Union Level 1, Tennis Teachers Award and First Aid at Work. His interests include supporting Wrexham AFC and Wales (football and rugby!), playing and coaching football, playing guitar, golf & tennis (recreational) and the occasional snack!

Anthony Walton

Lecturer in Sports Science, Basketball Coach

Anthony has a BSc Joint Honours in Sport Science and Business Studies and completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching. In addition, Anthony has completed Level 1 teaching/coaching qualifications in football, badminton, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball and cricket . His interests include Football, Basketball, Badminton, Athletics, Music and Socialising.

Ross Cope

Lecturer in Sports Science, Volleyball Coach

Ross studied at Manchester Metropolitan University for a BA Hons in Coaching and Sport Development. Additional Qualifications include FA level 3 (UEFA B) coaching football and a Level 2 qualification in Treatment and Management of Sports Injuries. In addition Ross has also gained a PGCE in Further Education. His interested include playing all sports particularly football, cricket and volleyball. Ross also enjoys coaching football and volleyball. Other interests include playing guitar, listening to music, gigging, and supporting Stoke FC.

Shelley Brown

Curriculum Leader/Lecturer in Sports Science/Sport, Performance and Excellence

Shelly has completed a BSc (Sport and Exercise Science) and an MSc (Sport and Exercise Science). Shelly also teaches on the BID Sport and Leisure, BFD Sport Science, BND Sport Science and the BNC/BND Sports, Performance and Excellence.

Mel Harling

Programme leader of A Level PE and BID Sport and Leisure, Lecturer in Sport

A county representative in Swimming, Gymnastics and Football, Mel is also a university graduate from Leeds Met University - Carnegie; with a BSc Hons in Sport and Exercise Science. Mel's specialist subject areas include: Anatomy, Exercise, Physiology and Biomechanics of Sport. Her specialist sports include swimming, gymnastics and football. Mel enjoys surfing, playing football and sleeping. Mel also plays football for Stoke City Ladies FC and is an experienced fitness instructor and personal trainer.

Clare Booker

Lecturer in Sport Sciences

Clare completed a BSc Sport and Exercise Sciences at Staffordshire University before going on to complete her PGCE at Manchester Metropolitan University. She has also completed Level 1 qualifications in Athletics and Hockey. Clare is a member of City of Stoke Athletics club at Northwood Stadium and enjoys middle distance running and cross country. Clare also enjoys playing hockey.

Trevor Humphreys

Lecturer in Sport Science, NULC Academy of Sport Co-ordinator

Trevor studied Sport and Exercise Science at Brunel University in London and then completed a Masters degree in Sport and the Law at Manchester Metropolitan University. Trevor worked as a Sports Development Officer for three years before moving into teaching. He completed his PGCE at Staffordshire University and became the Further Education Sport Co-ordinator (FESCo) for the College in July 2008. His specialist subject areas include Sports Sociology, Sports Law and Fitness Training. His interests include Football and watching Stoke City.
