The Gordon Banks Sports Centre Official Opening

Gordon Banks OBE visited Newcastle-under-Lyme College on Thursday 22 April 2010 to officially open the new £5 million Gordon Banks Sports Centre named in his honour.

More than 50 guests attended the event, including representatives from Port Vale and Newcastle Town Football Clubs as well as school PE teachers and community sports coordinators.

The official opening event for the sports centre included a mini football tournament for local primary school pupils, coordinated by Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS).

Football freestyle champion and Britain’s Got Talent star John Farnworth also performed soccer skills demonstrations for students at the College and judged a Skills Skool competition between the College's two football academies.

Meanwhile, members of the College’s Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP), which provides support for young people who take part in sport at county-standard or above, were given the chance to meet Gordon in a question and answer session.
