College hosts STEM Primary College day as part of anniversary celebrations

22nd June 2016

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) hosted a STEM Primary College day at their Knutton Lane campus on Tuesday 21 June as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.

Eighty-two Year 6 pupils from Langdale Primary, Chesterton Primary, St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Baldwin’s Gate CE (VC) Primary School experienced 5 exciting and innovative taster sessions focusing on STEM related subjects. Taster sessions included Science, Product Design, Construction, Music Technology and LEGO® Education in our LEGO® Innovation Studio.

Pupils got to experience a wide range of hands on activities from learning how to build and programme a crocodile using LEGO® Education, producing their own short piece of music and visiting the music technology recording and editing suite, learning about how astronauts adjust to life in space, testing their ingenuity with a construction building challenge and getting creative with the principles of product design.

The College’s LEGO® Education Innovation Studio, which was officially opened in February by the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Sandra Hambleton, is packed full of science, literacy, computing, design technology, engineering and maths related resources, including robotics aimed at developing the creative thinking and practical problem solving skills of tomorrow’s scientists, engineers, innovators and leaders.

Lucy Hancock, Schools Relationships Manager, said: “This event was all about helping the pupils gain an incite into the exciting opportunities they have in the future if they choose to study STEM related subjects. It’s also a great way to kick-start our 50th anniversary celebrations at the College”

The College is celebrating 50 years of serving the community in 2016 and have organised a number of activities taking place throughout the year to celebrate their many successes and achievements over the years, most notably a Community Open Day is taking place at NULC this Saturday.

Anyone wanting to take a tour of the College’s top flight facilities including the LEGO Innovation Studio are encouraged to attend the Community Open Day on Saturday 25 June, 10am – 2pm.

At the Community Open Day, visitors will also be able to get involved in and view a range of activities, exhibitions, demonstrations and interactive displays spanning five decades.
