A talented athlete from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) was recently awarded the title of Senior Sportswoman of the Year at a local awards ceremony.
Lucy Holt, aged 19 from Talke Pits, received the award at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s Newcastle Sports Awards ceremony, which was held at Keele Hall on Wednesday 31 May.
The annual Newcastle Sports Awards celebrate Newcastle-under-Lyme’s past and present sportspeople and recognise nominees’ dedication, determination and devotion to maintain the great tradition of sport that we know and love.
Lucy, who is a long distance runner, studying a HNC in Sport (Coaching and Sports Development) at NULC, was shortlisted to receive the Senior Sportswoman of the Year award after being nominated by her tutors at the College. Lucy recently represented NULC and the West Midlands in the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport Cross Country National Championships and won gold, after competing against a number of other talented college students from across the country.
Lucy is also an active member of the College’s Academy of Sport programme. The No.1 sports academy in the region, which was ranked as outstanding by Ofsted, provides students with the opportunity to play and compete in their chosen sport alongside studying for their course(s).
David Sutton, Academy of Sport Manager at NULC, said: “We’re really proud of Lucy’s achievements. She’s worked so hard to continue her passion of long distance running without compromising her studies. On behalf of the College, I wish Lucy every success in her sporting career.”
The College offers sports courses at various levels, including A Levels and vocational qualifications targeted to schools leavers and university-level courses targeted to adults.
