College supports World’s Biggest Coffee Morning by hosting a ‘Great British Bake Off’

30th September 2016

Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) held their own World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 30 September where staff and students brought from home a selection of tasty treats as part of a ‘Great British Bake Off’ style competition.

For the second year running, the ‘NULC Bake Off’ competition was in full-swing this morning with staff and students sharing a range of tasty treats to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support as part of their World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Tea, coffee and cake was on sale in the Food Hall at the Knutton Lane campus throughout the morning before the judging of the competition commenced.

The judges included the College’s very own Mary Berry (Mary Jones, College Councillor and NULC Bake Off winner 2015) and Paul Hollywood (Nigel Edwards, Catering Manager) who deducted marks for any underbaked shortbreads, runny icing or cakes with soggy bottoms.

As part of the College’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, NULC also hosted their first ever Book Exchange. Staff and students donated, swapped or purchased a book, grabbed a cup of tea or coffee and took a seat to enjoy their newest read.

Lynsey Shearsmith, Student Engagement Coordinator at NULC, said: “The NULC Bake Off competition is a fun and innovative way to support the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and we were pleased to see that lots of our staff and students went the extra mile by baking a range of tasty treats to support the charity.”

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. They ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raised £25 million and this year they are aiming to raise even more.

The College has raised over £200 today and all proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.
