A student from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) has been named as the Association of Colleges (AoC) Student Photographer of the Year in a national photography competition that recognises the outstanding creative talents of students across the country.

Student Edward Thomas, aged 16 from Stone, entered his photograph with a theme of ‘how colleges change lives’ and his winning photograph was chosen by judge Michael Pritchard, Director General of the Royal Photographic Society.

Edward, who is studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography at NULC, said: “I had a few photographs to choose from to enter, but this one best fitted the theme. It shows that when you’re focused on your own journey, everyone else is irrelevant.”

Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive of Newcastle-under-Lyme College, said: “Edward is a talented student who has demonstrated true creativity with his award winning entry.  I am delighted that his work has been recognised at a national level, it is a fantastic achievement and a great accolade for Edward to add to his portfolio.”

David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges, said: “This year’s entries were of a very high standard with a great sense of creativity and imagination. Edward’s image is well composed and captures how colleges can change lives for individuals. It is a worthy contender for this national award.”

Edward received his prize of an SLR Nikon camera at the AoC Annual Conference and Exhibition in Birmingham.

Second prize of £200 was given to Eva Edwards from Newcastle College with Chloe Cox, from Weston College, winning third prize of £100.

The Student Photographer of the Year Award is sponsored by National Open College Network (OCN).
