Olympic gold medallist visits NULC to inspire students
17th November 2016
Olympian Joe Clarke and Paralympians Jenny Booth and Ian Marsden visited Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) on Wednesday 16 November, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, to each deliver an inspirational talk to students and staff before taking part in a Q&A session.
Team GB’s gold medal-winning Joe, from Stone, talked about his early life, his dreams and how he never gave up to achieve his goals and he encouraged staff and students to do the same. The 23-year-old canoe slalomist earned his place at the British Olympic trials at the Lee Valley White Water Centre and he was later chosen to represent Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympics where he won a gold medal.
Ian Marsden and Jenny Booth also delivered a motivational talk on the evening and participated in the Q&A session.
Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive at NULC, said: “We were really honoured to welcome Joe, Jenny and Ian to the College. NULC is the number one sports college in the region and our sport provision has been rated outstanding by Ofsted. We have many sports-oriented students at the College and I know they really benefited from listening to their stories and drawing inspiration from local sporting heroes.”
Joe, Jenny and Ian answered questions from students who were looking to get some hints and tips on making it big in the world of sport and questions included ‘what it was like to represent Team GB at the Olympics?’ and ‘how did you feel when you won a medal?’.
