Past NULC student signs professional football contract
20th April 2017
An ex-student from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) has signed a professional football contract with Leicester City Football Club (LCFC).
Striker Joshua Gordon, aged 22 from Birches Head, put pen to paper with LCFC following a successful trail with the premier league club.
Joshua studied a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport at NULC between 2011 and 2013 where he was also a member of the College’s Academy of Sport Football Academy.
Shelley Brown, Assistant Director of Vocational Studies at NULC, said: “Joshua was an outstanding student and during his time with us he achieved top grades. The sports provision available at NULC is outstanding, we have top class facilities, industry level coaching and inspirational teaching. All of these factors go hand in hand which provide students like Joshua with the best opportunities to help them succeed in their chosen career.”
NULC’s multi-award-winning Academy of Sport programme, rated OUTSTANDING by Ofsted, gives full-time students the chance to study and pursue their sporting interests at the same time. As well as football, students can also join other performance academies including basketball, golf, netball, rugby, netball and volleyball.
David Sutton, Academy of Sport Manager at NULC, said: “Joshua was a really talented footballer and when he was part of the Football Academy at the College, he represented NULC at a number of football matches up and down the country.”
In 2016, NULC launched a brand-new football academy in partnership with ex-Stoke City captain, Andy Griffin. The Andy Griffin Football Academy (AGFA) is a two-year programme for young male and female players who have aspirations to play football at a high level or work in the football industry but also appreciate the importance of a top-class education.
Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive at NULC, added: “Everyone at NULC is really proud of Joshua and his achievements. We’re delighted for him and wish him success at LCFC and beyond.”
