School pupils invited to meet potential employers at college Open Event
7th March 2016
Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) will be opening its doors to prospective students on Wednesday 9th March, 5.30pm-8pm, to offer impartial advice on every type of post-16 course available, including apprenticeships
The College open event will be the last of the academic year and will have a special focus on apprenticeships. Young people and their families will be able to get information on the range of apprenticeship programmes available at NULC, from Health and Social Care and Childcare to Engineering and Construction.
A number of local employers including ABB, Fox’s Biscuits, the NHS and Siemens will be attending the event to provide advice, answer questions and promote the benefits of earning while you learn with an apprenticeship.
Karen Dobson, Principal and Chief Executive, said: “The aim of our open events is to provide school pupils with information on the full range of options available, so that they can make an informed choice about their future studies once they leave school. Because we offer over 33 different A Level courses, a huge range of vocational courses and apprenticeships, we can help young people find the most suitable route for them as individuals”
“Ahead of National Apprenticeships Week (NAW)* we plan to welcome around 20 local employers to the College to highlight the opportunities available through apprenticeships. We currently work over 800 local employers, supporting 1400 apprentices and our 16-18 apprenticeship success rate is 11% higher than the national average.”
As well as getting information on apprenticeships, parents and prospective students will also be able to speak to staff about the College’s wide range of A Level and vocational courses. There will also be opportunities to talk to current students about life at NULC, get involved in taster sessions and tour the stunning academic, vocational, sports, music and performing arts facilities on offer.
School leavers who want to apply to study at the College can do so on the evening at the ‘Application Station’, a designated area in the College where students can apply online for their course, with college staff on hand to provide guidance on completing the application process.
Staff will also be on hand to provide advice and guidance about the range of support on offer, from financial help and additional learner support to activities and enrichment opportunities.
In 2015 the College exceeded national benchmarks with a 99% pass rate for vocational subjects and a 99.2% pass rate for A Levels.
Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of subjects including, Accounting, Activity Leadership, Beauty Therapy, Brickwork, Business Administration, Carpentry/Joinery, Childcare, Creative Design, Customer Service, Engineering, Electrical Installation, Hairdressing/Barbering, Health and Social Care, Information Technology, Motor Vehicle, Painting and Decorating and Retail.
